On Saturday 20 March 2010 Le Race, the annual challenging and scenic cycle race leaves from Cathedral Square in Christchurch to Akaroa. Club cyclists have been competing in Christchurch to Akaroa races since the 1930s but in recent years the race has been developed into a special event for individuals and teams of cyclists from all backgrounds to attempt.

Canterbury groundwater levels fell in February as a result of settled weather combined with average-to-dry conditions, according to monitoring by Environment Canterbury scientists.

With summer finally arriving in February and March with hot temperatures and drying conditions throughout most of Canterbury, the rural fire risk has raised significantly.
Earlier rainfall throughout the region led to a very good growing season with excess vegetation now drying off and providing an excellent fuel source for fires.
